Peacefully went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday January 13, 2009 at his residence in New Hamburg. He was born 83 years ago in Wilmot Township and was the son of the late Jacob and Annie (Holtzworth) Holst. George was a member of Steinmann Mennonite Church, Baden. George enjoyed gardening, woodworking and volunteering at Nithview Home and the New Hamburg Thrift Store for many years.
Beloved husband of Grace (Jantzi) Holst whom he married June 2, 1948. Loving father of Robert & Vera Holst of Gowanstown, Bruce Holst & Brenda Meadows of Goderich, Paul & Cindy Holst of New Hamburg, Shirley & Steve Kennel of Bright, and Audrey & Paul Rooney of Kitchener. Loving grandpa of 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Viola Holst of Waterloo, Edith Holst of Kitchener, Luella & Wesley Sauder of St. Jacobs, John Holst of New Dundee, Ellen Holst, Mae Holst, both of New Hamburg, Susan Holst of Waterloo, Joanna Ropp of Tavistock, Doris & Rod Weber of Petersburg, and Eva & Milt Schwartzentruber of Beamsville. Lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends.
George was predeceased by sisters Margaret in infancy, Irene, brothers Walter, Clarence, Harvey, Delton and Albert, sister-in-law Beatrice Holst, and by brother-in-law Alfred Ropp.
Friends and relatives may call at Steinmann Mennonite Church, Snyder’s Road, Baden, on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. and again Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A private family interment will take place prior to the funeral service at Steinmann Mennonite Cemetery. The service to celebrate George’s life will follow on Saturday January 17th, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Steinmann Mennonite Church with Pastor Myrna Miller Dyck and Pastor Ilene Bergen officiating.
As expressions of sympathy donations may be made to Steinmann Mennonite Church Building Fund or Grand River Regional Cancer Centre.
